🎬 Case Study Spotlight: Subsense – Delivering Brain-Computer Interfaces Without a Single Incision.
What if the next brain-computer interface wasn’t implanted — it was inhaled? That is Subsense’s founding premise. While every other BCI company today either opens the skull or threads a catheter through a blood vessel, the Palo Alto startup is pursuing a radically different path: engineered nanoparticles, delivered via nasal spray, that cross the blood–brain barrier to both sense and stimulate neural activity. No incision. No implant.
Overview:
Subsense is developing the first nanoparticle-based, non-surgical bidirectional BCI. The system pairs two categories of engineered nanoparticles — plasmonic nanoparticles for signal sensing and magnetoelectric nanoparticles for stimulation — with specialized hardware and neural decoding software. Delivery is non-invasive: particles are administered via nasal spray and engineered to cross the blood–brain barrier, reaching target neural circuits without surgery. The company was co-founded by CEO Tetiana Aleksandrova and investor Artem Sokolov, and operates a dedicated neuroengineering laboratory in Palo Alto with academic partnerships at UC Santa Cruz and ETH Zurich.

Key Partnerships:
Subsense emerged from stealth in February 2025 with a $17M seed round led by Golden Falcon Capital, followed by a $10M extension in December 2025, bringing total funding to $27M. Golden Falcon has led every round to date — an unusually high-conviction signal at this pre-clinical stage. Academic validation partnerships with UC Santa Cruz and ETH Zurich are supporting early proof-of-concept work in nanoparticle delivery mechanisms and therapeutic applications.
Animal studies began in late 2025, with a proof-of-concept milestone targeted for late 2026: demonstrating reading, stimulation, and symptom treatment in mouse models of Parkinson’s or epilepsy. Pilot human clinical trials are projected for 2027. Biocompatibility and safety assessments are expected to complete by 2028, with regulatory submission to follow and approval targeted around 2031.

Subsense is led by Tetiana Aleksandrova (Co-Founder & CEO), a neurotech entrepreneur who has positioned the company at the intersection of materials science, neuroscience, and clinical translation. Co-founder Artem Sokolov, founder of Golden Falcon Capital, brings venture and strategic capital experience alongside deep conviction in the nanoparticle BCI thesis — having backed the company at every funding stage. The R&D team spans nanoparticle engineering, neural signal acquisition, machine learning, and regulatory strategy, with a dedicated Director of R&D Systems appointed in December 2025.
